Mega Charizard X ex and Y ex: what the Phantasmal Flames Megas are worth

Mega Charizard X ex and Y ex are worth €300 to €760 ungraded and around €1,300 in PSA 10 in October 2026, down 46% in a year. Plus Mega Gengar ex.

The Pokechrono editorial teamPublished 20 October 2026

Two cards fanned out on a light paper background, with their shadow: Mega Charizard X ex, with its blue flames, and Mega Gengar ex, in dark purple.

Mega Evolutions returned to the Pokémon Trading Card Game in the autumn of 2025, and two Charizard are leading the new era. Mega Charizard X ex, Special Illustration Rare 125/094 from Phantasmal Flames (Fiamme Spettrali), and Mega Charizard Y ex, Mega Hyper Rare 294/217 from Ascended Heroes (Ascesa Eroica), are each worth between €300 and €760 ungraded on the Italian market according to the Pokechrono catalogue, and the PSA 10 price for the last month is around €1,300 according to PriceCharting, October 2026. Both figures are down on a year ago: we explain why, what sets the two cards apart and how they compare with Mega Gengar ex.

Two Charizard, two sets

In 2014, in the XY era, Mega Evolutions first appeared on cards as M Charizard-EX in two forms: the X, a Dragon type with blue flames, and the Y, a Fire type. The set was Flashfire, and for many Italian collectors those two cards were the first Charizard they chased as adults.

Eleven years on, history repeats itself, but the two forms are split across two sets. Mega Charizard X ex 125/094 is the cover card of Phantasmal Flames, released in Italy in November 2025, as a Special Illustration Rare by danciao. Mega Charizard Y ex is not in that set: it arrives with Ascended Heroes, in February 2026, as the Mega Hyper Rare 294/217 illustrated by aky CG Works.

What they are worth today

The catalogue figures, updated in October 2026, are per card in collector condition:

  • ungraded: between €300 and €760, depending on version and printing;
  • PSA 10, last month's price: around €1,300, down 46% over twelve months according to PriceCharting;
  • a PSA 10 is worth around 2.4 times the ungraded card and around 2.3 times a PSA 9.

The twelve-month drop is the figure that matters most. A year ago Phantasmal Flames had only just come out, booster packs were hard to find and the SIR commanded a scarcity price. Then the reprints did their work, Ascended Heroes brought the Y and attention was split. We are not going to say where it is heading: what we can say is that the market has already done a good part of its settling.

Mega Gengar ex, the third card of the era

If the two Charizard are the most sought-after cards, Mega Gengar ex 284/217 is the most expensive. The Special Illustration Rare from Ascended Heroes, again by danciao, is worth between €700 and €1,050 ungraded according to the Pokechrono catalogue, and around €1,550 in PSA 10 according to PriceCharting, October 2026, down 48% over twelve months. The PSA 10 is worth around 2.2 times the ungraded card and 1.9 times a PSA 9.

Mega Gengar ex 056/094 from Phantasmal Flames is a different card: a common Double Rare, worth a few euros and in the catalogue for completeness. The name is the same, and listings often confuse the two.

In short: in October 2026 Mega Gengar ex SIR is worth more than either Mega Charizard ungraded, but in PSA 10 all three cards sit between €1,300 and €1,550, with a modest premium for the 10.

Why the Megas have rekindled the modern market

Between 2023 and 2025 the modern card market had narrowed to a handful of subjects: the Eeveelutions of Prismatic Evolutions, the Charizard ex of Pokémon 151, the odd Pikachu. Mega Evolutions brought back a mechanic that collectors from the XY era remember fondly and that younger ones had never pulled from a pack.

Charizard has always been the most searched name among Italian collectors, and two Mega Charizard in two consecutive sets have concentrated that demand on a few card numbers. The Elite Trainer Boxes of the Mega Evolution series are the best-selling sealed product in Italy, and the Mega Charizard tins released in February 2026 vanished from the shelves within weeks.

SIR or Mega Hyper Rare: the same Charizard, two different cards

Phantasmal Flames also contains Mega Charizard X ex 130/094, the Mega Hyper Rare version on a gold background, illustrated by Takuyoa. Ungraded it is worth between €240 and €300, less than the SIR, but in PSA 10 last month's price is around €1,900 according to PriceCharting, October 2026, down 43% over twelve months. The premium for the 10 is around 10 times the ungraded card and 8.5 times a PSA 9.

The reason is the surface. The etched gold background shows every micro-scratch, and the top grade is hard to achieve: a Mega Hyper Rare in PSA 10 is far rarer than the same card fresh from the pack. The SIR gets a 10 more often and its premium stays close to twice. Those who buy for the artwork choose the SIR; those who collect graded copies look to the Mega Hyper Rare and its certificate.

A comparison helps keep feet on the ground: Mega Gardevoir ex 187/132, the Mega Hyper Rare from the first set of the series, Mega Evolution, is worth today between €160 and €200 ungraded and around €500 in PSA 10, down 74% over twelve months. The first few weeks of a set do not decide what a card is worth.

Where to find them: tins, decks and ETBs

Those who prefer sealed product have three routes. The pair of Mega Charizard X ex and Y ex collector tins is in the shop at €102.90, with five booster packs and a promo card per box. The Phantasmal Flames Elite Trainer Box, the blue box with Mega Charizard X ex, costs €102.90. The pair of Mega Gengar ex and Mega Diancie ex Battle Decks, at €94.90, is the only product in the series designed for learning to play with Mega Evolutions.

Every copy auctioned on Pokechrono comes in PSA 10, with the certificate number on the listing and a second check by our expert before shipping. On textured, dark-bordered cards like these, verifying the set, the number and the surface avoids mistakes: the method is on the how we verify page.

Frequently asked questions

How much is Mega Charizard X ex SIR 125/094 worth in 2026?

Ungraded, between €300 and €760 according to the Pokechrono catalogue, depending on version and printing. In PSA 10, last month's price is around €1,300 according to PriceCharting, October 2026, down 46% over twelve months. These are prices from realised sales, not a forecast.

Is Mega Charizard Y ex in Phantasmal Flames?

No. Mega Charizard Y ex arrives with Ascended Heroes, in February 2026, as the Mega Hyper Rare 294/217. Phantasmal Flames has Mega Charizard X ex as the Special Illustration Rare 125/094 and in the gold version 130/094.

Why is the gold Mega Hyper Rare worth more than the SIR in PSA 10?

Because the etched gold background shows every micro-scratch and the top grade is rare: in October 2026 a PSA 10 of the 130/094 is worth around ten times the ungraded card, against around 2.4 times for the SIR. Ungraded, though, the SIR is worth more.
